Fragments of the Villa
Workshop for the exhibition „Mies in the Picture“
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is known primarily as one of the most famous modernist architects. But have you ever heard of his collages and photomontages? This lesser-known aspect of Mies’ work clearly illustrates his approach to designing architecture and at the same time presents unique works of art. The Fragments of the Villa workshop ideologically and thematically follows the Mies in the Picture exhibition, installed on the technical floor of the Villa Tugendhat on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of Mies’ birth. Together with educator Oleksandra Surkova, we will learn about the expressive possibilities of collage and photomontage, the reasons why modernist architects liked these techniques, and the ways in which Mies himself worked with them. The villa itself and fragments of its history will serve as inspiration for our own work. During the workshop, which will take place on the technical floor and in the garden, participants will try using the collage technique and create original compositions inspired by this iconic building.
The workshop is intended for children aged 8–14.
