Fait Gallery

Fait Gallery is a young gallery institution gradually expanding its range of interests beyond the Czech. Originally operating in the former Royal-Polish Brewery, it has been continuing its work at the Vaňkovka factory since 2016. Its exhibition projects cover the entire spectrum of visual art from the 20th and 21st centuries, featuring both established Czech artists and the contemporary art of the younger generation. In addition, it is committed to supporting private collecting in Brno.

Galerie Edikula

The student gallery project emerged from meetings among a group of students from the Faculty of Arts. Discussions about the lack of curatorial practice for students and graduates of the Seminar of Art History and Cultural Management led to the idea of establishing a gallery that would allow students to explore the boundaries between art theory and practical gallery experience.

Galerie Cejla

Galerie Cejla was established in the former premises of the artist-run project SOLO offspace. The platform and its eponymous curatorial team aim to create a new exhibition and educational space in Brno. OFF/FORMAT

The gallery is located in the courtyard tract on Gorkého Street. Amidst the clamor of the busy center, the inner courtyard offers a quiet space for contemplating the exhibited works. The institution primarily focuses on presenting young Czech artists. OFF/FORMAT’s roots were planted by former students of the Department of Art Education at the Faculty of Education, with Ondřej Navrátil, Petr Kovář, and Šimon Kříž contributing to its development.

Mikro-teatro is an auteur residential theater that brings its productions into micro-spaces or creates micro site-specific projects. Galerie FaVU

“Can you tell who’s from FaVU in a crowd?” This playful inscription is located on the wall in front of the gates of the building on Rybářská Street, where the Faculty of Fine Arts originally was based. Today, its headquarters are situated under the Technical University at the corner of Údolní and Úvozu. The current FaVU offers seventeen studios – including the so-called Visiting Artist’s Studia, which allow for experiencing a semester under the guidance of a guest artist.

Postpost gallery

Postpost gallery is an independent, experimental space for presenting contemporary art, housed in a showcase next to the Spolek café. The space was created to support independent projects by artists and to offer an alternative mode of exhibiting contemporary art without being confined by a particular medium or format. It focuses on the fight against overproduction of content and forms, and on articulating the uncertainties and crises of our times.

Muzeum města Brna - Hrad Špilberk

The Brno City Museum, a significant institution with over a century of tradition, has been housed since 1960 in the National Cultural Monument – the Špilberk Castle and Fortress. Visual art is presented in exhibitions under the Brno City Gallery umbrella, including shows such as “Austrian Moravia,” “Moderna” (followed chronologically by “From Modernity to Contemporary”), and interwar architecture is featured in the “O nové Brno” exhibition.

Muzeum města Brna - Vila Tugendhat

Architectural purity, the interplay of interior and exterior spaces, timeless technical equipment, noble and exotic materials, and above all, a high degree of preservation – these are the main attributes that led to Villa Tugendhat being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. Built between 1929 and 1930 for Grete and Fritz Tugendhat according to the design by German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the villa is part of the Brno City Museum.

Industra Art

A cultural space that is a symbiosis of all the senses – that is Industra. This unconventional gallery supports both emerging and established artists through collective and individual exhibitions. The venue also includes a café and spaces of Divadlo Feste, which complement the visual experience. Formerly housed in an old cold store, it has now relocated to the factory complex of Nová Zbrojovka, which is currently undergoing rapid development.

Galerie Umakart

Many Brno residents have likely “visited” Galerie Umakart without even realizing it. The display case at the Antonínská stop was transformed in 2008 into a living entity by the initiative of students from the Faculty of Fine Arts, regularly updating its content. The window display offers an opportunity for continuous interaction with art – a place to see the ordinarily unseen and to subtly broaden one’s horizons.

Terén

A stage for contemporary live art and new forms of audiences. Terén is a dramaturgical and production platform without its own ensemble and permanent stage, which has been operating alongside the Husa na provázku Theatre and HaDivadlo as part of the Centre for Experimental Theatre since 2019. We support the creation and performance of new works of contemporary live and interdisciplinary art.

Open Studios Art Hub

Open Studios focuses on the diversity of the Brno scene – encompassing fresh graduates, relocated artists, as well as established painters, sculptors, and conceptual artists. The platform is continuously mapping urban clusters where artists live and work, with the aim of opening studios to the public for a weekend in June. The festival also seeks to showcase the breadth of contemporary art, its various approaches, and the ways individual artists or artistic groups think about it.

Scala is a space with nearly a century of cinematic tradition. Serving students, academics, and the general public, the cinema not only presents traditional film screenings but also live broadcasts from opera and theatre stages, lectures, debates, festivals, concerts, and theatrical productions. Moravské zemské muzeum - Palác Šlechtičen

The House U šlechtičen was built between 1682 and 1690 in the style of an urban baroque palace by Jan Křtitel Ernů. In 1790–1791, the building was expanded with an additional floor and connected to the neighboring Althanský Palace. Its interior features a chapel adorned with late baroque frescoes. The palace served as a foundation for the education of abandoned noble and burgher girls.

Vašulka Kitchen Brno

The Center for New Media Art – Vašulka Kitchen Brno (VKB) is a space for research, artistic experimentation, and informal education in new media art. It comprises the study archive of Woody and Steina Vašulka, an exhibition of selected works, and a reading room. A regular public program is held here, including lectures, concerts, exhibitions, presentations, workshops, screenings, and seminars.

Schrott Gallery

The gallery is housed in a factory space from the early 20th century near the former Vlněna textile mill. It operates in symbiosis with the neighboring Schrott cellar, from which it has gradually separated. Its exhibition program focuses on photography, complemented by painting, sculpture, drawing, and applied graphics. The gallery provides space for both established contemporary art creators in Brno and the surrounding area, as well as for the youngest generation of students.

Knihovna Jiřího Mahena

The First Republic brought many public libraries to Czechoslovakia, and Brno was no exception. A library was meant not only as a place to borrow books but as an institution that systematically educates and nurtures, as envisioned by Jiří Mahen, the founder and organizer of Brno’s cultural life. Even today, the library continues his legacy as an important community center actively involved in cultural life. The Central Library is complemented by a network of branches throughout the city.

The Museum opens pathways to the roots of Roma identity and contributes to tolerance and mutual understanding. In the European context, it is a unique institution that documents Roma and Sinti culture globally. Galerie Sibiř is an exhibition space located in the cultural center Sibiř in Brno’s Husovice district. Since 2022, it has presented works by both local and non-local artists. The name of the creative hub KUMST combines the German word for art (“kunst”) with the Czech synonym for artisanal precision (“kumšt”). Housed in the former Faculty of Fine Arts at VUT in Brno on Údolní 19, it provides a base for the work and education of creative professionals. It offers consulting support in business matters and also runs a curated program of lectures, discussions, workshops, occasional exhibitions, and cultural events focused on creative industries.

Galerie Josefa Jambora v Tišnove

GJJ is located in the house where the academic painter Josef Jambor lived and worked between 1931 and 1964. In 2017, part of the house was renovated into modern exhibition spaces. The gallery presents the work of Josef Jambor as well as contemporary art, with an emphasis on artists of the young and middle generations. It also responds to the needs of the local community by implementing artistic interventions in the public space of Tišnov.

Rezidence Café Kaprál

The uniquely preserved apartment of Brno poet Zeno Kaprál (1941–2020) offers a space for literary gatherings, readings, discussions, book christenings, and other events. The program is curated by TIC Brno – in collaboration with the publishers Host, Druhé město, and Větrné mlýny, as well as the Moravian Library and the magazine Host – and features formats that bridge literature and visual art. The atmosphere is enriched by the apartment’s original furniture and fittings.

Galerie Otevřená zahrada

The exhibition space of Galerie Otevřená zahrada is located on three floors of a passive building in a courtyard on Údolní, which is connected to the environmental project Otevřená zahrada. Centrum pro studium raného novověku

The Center for the Study of the Early Modern Period is the official research center of the Seminar of Art History at the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, founded on the initiative of art historian Jiří Kroupa. It is also committed to education through meetings with scholars and curators, as well as via a film club.

Galerie Průchod

Galerie Průchod is an exhibition space located in a passage connecting Úvoz and Údolní streets. Its very character invites installations and the consumption of art. The generous space, suitable lighting, and well-maintained walls invite visitors to pause and engage in a subtle, non-invasive manner. Anyone passing through becomes unwittingly part of the installation – a visitor who may be unsure of what they are looking at, yet is subtly influenced by the space.

Fakulta výtvarných umění VUT v Brně (FaVU)

The Faculty of Fine Arts at the Brno University of Technology (FaVU) is the smallest and second youngest faculty of the university. Founded in 1993, it is the oldest art faculty at a non-art university in the Czech Republic. Covering a range of disciplines including fine arts, applied arts, and contemporary trends, it spans the entire spectrum of contemporary art and design. Currently, FaVU has 17 studios.

Muzeum města Brna- Arnoldova vila

Arnold Villa is a cultural monument and part of the oldest villa colony in Brno, established in the 1860s. It is located in close proximity to Brno’s most sought-after monument – Villa Tugendhat. It was the second building constructed on the slope above Lužánky, built in 1862 according to the design of prominent Brno builder Josef Arnold, and later modified in the Art Deco style between 1909 and 1915 by Cecilie Hože.

Moravské zemské muzeum - Památník Leoše Janáčka

The exhibition “The Life and Work of Leoš Janáček” is located in the garden house of the former organ school where Leoš Janáček lived from 1910 to 1928. It includes Janáček’s original studio with a piano, while another part of the house hosts a modern exhibition that provides basic textual and visual information about the composer’s life and recalls his best-known works. Temporary exhibitions are held here as well.

Galerie Art (Kino Art)

The gallery is located in the foyer of the Art Cinema in Brno. The classical linear perception of the exhibition becomes dominant here, to which the artists usually naturally submit, even though the space for experimentation remains open. The gallery is managed by the group Grau kllktv as a mobile space for long-term and temporary projects. It does not seek a fixed shape and place, it works with opportunity and lives in the moment.

ssesi (pronounced /ˈsasi/ as in “sassy”) is a cross-sectional cultural organisation freely traversing formats and disciplines. ssesi is planted on the steep hills of the Svratka river in Brno, Czechia, on the land of former communal gardens that are now rewilding. It connects artists, architects, environmental scientists and engaged public with the context of former urban gardens, its cultures and more-than-human specificities.
