The deserter drone, the main actor in A. W. O. L., an exhibition by Mikuláš Zimula at Postpost Gallery, is an allegory of ambivalence towards blind obedience to orders and individual responsibility to evaluate war crimes. Flights over the desolate landscape, conversations with the fragments that remain - reflections of the killing machine. A wandering pilgrimage to the end of Inferno. The wartime use of drones, questions of military ethics, kamikaze, the battlefield as a playground, disembodiment, desertion, technical failure or a higher degree of automation? Is the direct experience of suffering and destruction made more distant by remote control technologies? Operator, commander, programmer, state? What is the impact of this anonymization? What does absence mean in the present? A.W.O.L. Commando.
Mikuláš Zimula presents his works in spatial scenarios. By frequent transitions from digital to analogue and vice versa he creates speculative artefacts. The starting point is often an exploration of fictional (often affective) spaces, touching on anomalies, fears, dystopias, distorted pasts and the rapidly growing influence of technology. These themes are often interwoven with metaphorical layers and fragmented narratives. Mikuláš Zimula is a student of the Video Studio at FaVU VUT in Brno.
